with the arms of Araújo quartering Pereira, Pinto and Azevedo, flanked by cherub supporters above a blue banderole inscribed in gilding AD. ARAUJO, within a narrow diaper border around the cavetto and four blue-scroll edged sepia landscape cartouches alternating with smaller cartouches of animals or birds around the gilt-edged rim.

NOTE

A covered oval vegetable dish from this service, made for António de Araújo e Azevedo (1754-1817), 1st and only Count de Barca, is illustrated by David Howard and John Ayers, China for the West, Vol. II, p. 386, no. 382, who also give a biography of this Portuguese citizen, who served as Minister of Naval Affairs in Brazil in 1814.

A group of pieces from this service, also from the Helena Woolworth McCann Collection, was sold in these rooms, January 18, 1996, lots 408-416. A single plate was sold at Christie's, New York, January 21, 1998, lot 202.
