RED PHALAROPE (PLATE CCLV)

Phalaropus fulicarius JW 36 fine, fresh impression, a slight vertical crease in the sky at center, slight soiling in the margins 15 3/4 by 22 1/2 in.; 401 by 571 mm. Based on a composition painted in London in 1835. Audubon encountered this bird on only two occasions and, not having observed its breeding habits, understandably mistook the more brightly colored specimens as males, whereas in this species the converse is true.
