CANVAS BACKED DUCK... VIEW OF BALTIMORE


(Plate CCCI) Canvasback, "Aythya valisineria" JW 36 slight crease in the blank area at upper left, two repaired tears in the upper edge, some soiling in the margins, glue remains in the upper sheet below binding edge sheet 24 3/4 by 37 3/4 in.; 630 by 961 mm. The studies of the two ducks at right were done in Louisiana in 1821. They were cut out and mounted by Audubon on a sheet together with his study of the male at left (done in Baltimore in April, 1834) to form this handsome composition. 'In the background is a view of Baltimore, which I have had great pleasure in introducing, on account of the hospitality which I have there experienced, and the generosity of its inhabitants...'
