CCLXIX) Tringa nebularia JW 35 very good impression, slight soiling and foxing, mainly at right 14 7/8 by 20 5/8 in.; 378 by 523 mm. The composition was probably painted in England in 1835, using a preserved specimen. No one other than Audubon has ever claimed to have seen this European species in America; it is considered possible that he confused it with the greater yellow-legs (see lot 308).
