Based on a composition probably painted in 1838 from a specimen in the Zoological Society, London. Audubon claimed that he discovered the small-headed flycatcher in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1808, although Alexander Wilson, to whom Audubon had shown this drawing, first published and named it. Since the Zoological Society specimen is unique, the existence of the species is, in any case, doubtful.
