Imi Knoebel, *1940 Dessau, lives and works in Düsseldorf, portrait, inscribed on verso "Anna", acrylic/wood, 50 x 35.5 x 8.5 cm, composed of five rectangles, monogrammed and dated on verso (19)91, very good condition, Provenance: Collection ABB Mannheim. The work is part of the series of portraits from 1991-95. For each rectangle a new differentiable colour tone was mixed, resulting in a stylised face. However, Knoebel is not concerned with the figure of real persons, but with the overriding idea of portrait painting.

Die Arbeit stammt aus der Werkreihe der Porträts der Jahre 1991-95. Für jedes Rechteck wurde dafür ein neuer differenzierbarer Farbton angemischt, woraus sich zusammengesetzt ein stilisiertes Gesicht ergibt. Es geht Knoebel jedoch nicht um die Abbildung realer Personen, sondern um die übergeordnete Idee der Bildnismalerei.
