HAVELL'S TERN. TRUDEAU'S TERN (PLATE CCCCIX)
Forster's Tern, "Sterna forsteri. Sterna trudeaui" JW 37 fine, fresh impression 15 1/8 by 24 5/8 in.; 386 by 625 mm. Trudeau's Tern is based on a drawing done in London in 1838. "This beautiful Tern, which has not hitherto been described, was procured at Great Egg Harbour in New Jersey, by my much esteemed and talented friend, J. Trudeau, Esq. of Louisiana, to whom I have great pleasure in dedicating it." Havell's tern is drawn from a bird shot by Audubon in New Orleans in the winter of 1820- -21. Although Audubon named this species in honor of his engraver, it is known today as "Forster's tern".
