WILSON'S PHALAROPE (PLATE CCLIV)

Steganopus tricolor JW 36 fine, fresh impression, slight ripples in the blank area at top, roman numeral corrected by hand to CCLIV 15 7/8 by 21 5/8 in.; 405 by 550 mm. Plate number was incorrectly engraved as CCLVI, and was corrected by hand. Based on a composition painted on the northern Atlantic coast in 1832 or 1833. Not having had the opportunity to often observe Wilson's Phalarope, Audubon misidentified the sexes.
