Follower of Thomas Gainsborough RA, FRSA (1727-1788)"Portrait of the Duke of York and his sister"Inscribed to canvas verso "Painted by Gainsborough, portraits of the Duke of York and his sister, a cabinet specimen for a large picture for General Guise of the court of George 3", oil on canvas, 32cm by 20cmContained in an elaborate carved wood and gesso frameOld reline, lightly cleaned and revarnished as parts of the canvas show signs of some surface abrasion/flattening and the paint is thin in places such as the background up and right of the standing young gentlemen, the horizontal masonry of the architectural portico, parts of the foreground etc. Now covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish, evidence of some minor and general rubbing to edges, slight stretcher shadow, pinholes to bottom corners. Some lightly fine retouching above the ladies right-hand, odd fine and essentially sporadic, vertical or horizontal retouch to parts of the portico upper section in general. Some possible strengthening to the definition and shadows to the gentlemen's left sleeve. Definition and shadows of his cape and further relatively minor areas of the background mostly right-hand side. The outline of the lady's face and definitions and shadows of the garment across her right arm also shows minor strengthening etc. Areas of fine stable cracquelure.
