Morgan Dollars 1884-S $1 MS63 PCGS. The 1884-S Morgan

Morgan Dollars
1884-S $1 MS63 PCGS. The 1884-S Morgan dollar is often viewed as a twin to the 1883-S -- both issues are plentiful in circulated grades but are condition keys in Mint State. However, the 1884-S is significantly scarcer than the 1883-S in Uncirculated condition. Most examples seen are no finer than MS62, and coins above MS63 are decidedly rare. There were no significant quantities seen among the dollars released from the Treasury in the 1960s, and limited disbursements in earlier years largely went into circulation. Most of the 3.2 million coins struck were released into circulation in the 19th century and became well worn, or were melted as a result of the Pittman Act of 1918.
This Select example displays a bold strike and radiant cartwheel luster, with traces of delicate champagne color. Abrasions are minimal. In MS63, this coin is three full points finer than Q. David Bowers' "optimal collecting grade" of MS60. That alone speaks to the rarity and importance of this offering. Population: 56 in 63 (6 in 63+), 15 finer (7/23). From The Stuard Collection of Morgan Dollars.
