CALIFORNIAN VULTURE (PLATE CCCCXXVI)


California Condor, "Gymnogyps californianus" JWTM 38 slightly soiled in the blank area at left sheet 38 1/8 by 25 1/2 in.; 968 by 647 mm. Based on a composition painted probably in London, in 1838. The Condor, the largest of all North American landbirds, with a wing span of nearly ten feet, was almost extinct in 1966. The Zoological Society of San Diego is at present actively engaged in the saving of this splendid bird from extinction.
