HAWK OWL (PLATE CCCLXXVIII)
Surnia ulula JW 38 slight offprint showing through on the recto 26 1/8 by 21 5/8 in.; 665 by 550 mm. Based on a study perhaps painted in Charleston during the winter of 1836- -37, from specimens procured for him by Thomas MacCulloch of Pictou, Nova Scotia. Audubon asked Havell to complete the composition by adding "an old Rotten stick".
