EARED GREBE (PLATE CCCCIV)
Podiceps nigricollis JWTM 37 three strong fox marks in the right margin touched with white (one reinforced on the verso) 12 3/8 by 19 3/4 in.; 314 by 501 mm. Based on a composition apparently painted in London in 1838, when the publication was near completion. Specimens of this bird were lent to Audubon by Lord Derby (Lord Stanley as he then was). Lord Derby was the patron of another bird painter, Edward Lear.
