REDDISH EGRET (PLATE CCLVI)

Dichromanassa rufescens JW 36 fine, fresh impression, traces of printer's ink in the left margin sheet 25 5/8 by 38 in.; 650 by 965 mm. Based on a composition painted April, 1832 in Florida. Contrary to the engraved caption, both birds are adults. Audubon did not realize that the coloring of the plumage of this egret is not related to age or sex, but varies with each individual bird.
