CAYENNE TERN (PLATE CCLXXIII)


Royal Tern, "Sterna maxima" JW 36 fine, brilliantly colored impression, a small crease in the bottom right margin corner, minor soiling in the margins 15 by 20 5/8 in.; 380 by 525 mm. Based on a composition painted in May, 1832, in the Florida Keys. "The figure of the Crab in the plate, was introduced on account of its singularly bright colour, which when the animal is boiled, changes to a pale yellow. It is rather common along the rocky shores of some of the Florida Keys, and is excellent eating.".
