Footnotes: ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCOIS EISEN (BRUXELLES 1695-1778) The Continence of Scipio oil on panel Provenance : Probably P. J. de Waepenaert, his sale, Bruges, 30 May 1774, n° 116. Probably De Hulstere, his sale, Brussels, 17 April 1810, n° 30. Private Collection, France We are grateful to François Marandet for suggesting the attribution to François Eisen (private communication 15 September 2021). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com The panel is in good order. The varnish is thick and uneven. Minor abrasions are visible along the edges where the frame has rubbed. There is a diagonal split through the whole panel, with corresponding infilling. Small areas of discoloured restoration are just visible, such as to the blue of the boy's costume lower right and to the foreground, lower left. Inspection under UV light is hindered by thick varnish, but it is still possible to see the aforementioned infilling to the split; and scattered infillings and small areas of restoration. Further restoration cannot be excluded.
