COLUMBIAN HUMMING BIRD (PLATE CCCCXXV)

Anna's Hummingbird, "Calypte anna" Flora: hibiscus, drawn by Maria Martin JW 38 fine, fresh, brilliantly colored impression 19 5/8 by 12 3/8 in.; 498 by 315 mm. Based on a composition probably painted in London, 1838. Audubon received the nest and female from Thomas Nuttall, who collected them in the Rocky Mountains. The four males were drawn from specimens Audubon found in an English collection. See color illustration on Plate II.
